You People on Netflix is the latest comedy that has a lot of people buzzing with excitement online. With the first look released back in December and an extended trailer recently available for everyone to watch, it certainly is a hotly-anticipated project that many will surely tune in to and will undoubtedly be a solid hit for the streaming service.

Despite the lighthearted comedic elements of the movie, which Kenya Barris directs, You People is also an important watch as it explores the challenges of interracial and interfaith dating in modern-day America, with Black Twitter buzzing about how the movie will represent them once it hits the streaming service. There is also the added bonus of an epic A-list cast, including Nia Long and Eddie Murphy, which will keep audiences entertained.

So if you want to know more about You People, keep on reading…

What is the plot of You People?

The plot of the movie centres on Ezra Cohan (Jonah Hill) and Amira Mohammed (Lauren London), who fall in love after a rideshare mix-up in Los Angeles. While everything appears to go swimmingly at first, their respective families test their relationship. As Ezra's progressive and semi-woke parents (Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Duchovny) meet Amira's tough-as-nails, concerned parents, the families clash over culture, generational differences and societal expectations.

At the core of the movie, the plot centres on the romance between a white Jewish man and a Black Muslim woman. With comedy movies typically ending with happiness and victory, we're pretty sure that these two characters will overcome all hurdles to be together and forge an enviable life ahead. And as with previous comedy movies on the same topic, such as The Lovebirds, Something New and The Hundred-Foot Journey, the message of togetherness and "against all odds" is what we want to see when it comes to normalising interracial relationships.

What are people saying online about You People?

While people are mostly excited about seeing the romance between Jonah and Lauren's character unfold, some have criticised director Kenya's constant career focus on biracial relationships.

"Kenya Barris' obsession with interracial couples is a person problem that he gotta leave us out of already," one person tweeted about the Black-ish creator, who co-wrote You People with lead actor Jonah.

However, others defended Kenya, as one waded into the conversation, stating: "All these crime show dramas like Power, Snowfall, and BMF and no one says anything about "new content." But the minute y'all see one or two interracial films, it's a problem. Please. There is nothing wrong with what Kenya Barris is putting out." Someone else wrote: "Does too much of Kenya Barris's work focus on people being bi-racial? Prolly. But if that's his lane, let that be his lane. Point is, he's employing thousands of Black people in Hollywood and giving newcomers like  @SamJayComic &  @YungMiami305 a shot. F*** are you doing?".
